St Marys, Walkerville, Windsor, Ontario

September 1, the Ven. Jane Humphreys, currently the rector of St. Luke’s Broughdale, London and Archdeacon of Middlesex, will become the rector of St. Mary’s, Walkerville, Windsor.

Organ Console, WalkervilleWhen built, St Marys Memorial Church housed a Karn pipe organ which in 1967 was rebuilt. It was restored and modernized in 2 stages in 1995 and 1996.

Hiram WalkerTheir three sons erected St Marys in 1903-1904 as a memorial to Hiram and Mary Walker. Hiram Walker had built the first St. Mary's Church in 1870, which for the first 2 years was Methodist.

Walker, born in Massachusetts in 1816, founded Walkerville where he built his distillery that produced Canadian Club Whiskey. Walker only lived in Canada from 1859 to 1864 and died in Detroit in 1899.

Fred Hiltz, New Anglican Primate

Bishop Fred HiltzYesterday, Bishop Fred Hiltz of the diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island was elected as the 13th primate of the Anglican Church of Canada. He won on the fifth ballot receiving 60 out of 116 votes (51.7 per cent) from clergy, and 81 out of 137 votes from laity (59 per cent). Bishop Victoria Matthews of the diocese of Edmonton received 56 votes from clergy, and 56 from the laity. The other candidates nominated for primate, Bishop Bruce Howe of Huron and Bishop George Bruce of Ontario, were dropped on the third ballot.

In the 3rd and 4th ballots Bishop Matthews received a majority of the votes from clergy while Bishop Hiltz received the majority of votes from the laity. If the stalemate had remained on the 5th ballot, the decision of choosing the next primate would have fallen on the bishops, who were sequestered nearby.

Bishop Fred Hiltz was born and raised in Dartmouth, N.S. He is a graduate of Dalhousie University (BSc major in Biology) and the Atlantic School of Theology (MDiv). He was ordained a deacon on June 3, 1977, and as priest on June 29, 1978. He served in the Nova Scotia parishes of Christ Church, Sydney; Melford-Guysborough; Timberlea-Lakeside; The Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax; and St. John’s Church, Lunenburg.

In October 1994, he was elected Suffragan Bishop, and ordained and installed on January 18, 1995. In November 2001, Bishop Hiltz was elected Coadjutor Bishop, and was subsequently installed Diocesan Bishop on March 21, 2002.

Starting in 1971 with the 10th Primate, The Most Rev. Edward W. Scott (1919-2004), Primates are permanently based in Toronto and do not continue as a diocesan bishop.

St Jude's, Brantford, Ontario

St Jude's, Brantford, OntarioSt Jude's, Brantford was built in 1871 and consecrated when its debt was paid off in 1889. Extensive alterations were made in 1930-31, when a new narthex was built, the sanctuary area was enlarged and the former entrance was converted into a baptistery.

The building had originally been simply adorned. In the 1930s the Browne family of artists created murals, which in succession around the nave, present events in the life of Jesus Christ from the proclaiming of his birth to His death and resurrection. Pictured is The Resurrection; it has the caption 'The third day He rose again.' The interior paintings and artwork of St. Jude's were designated a national Historic Site by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada in September 1999.

St Johns, Tillsonburg, Ontario

St Johns, Tillsonburg, OntarioThe first service was held in the present St. John the Evangelist building in September 1900. It is the third church building with, at other locations, the first building being built in 1868 and the second in 1872.

The church belfry had stood empty until 2002 when the bell that had belonged to Trinity Church, Norwich was installed.

Rev. Bill Ward appointed June 1st, rector of St. John's, Tillsonburg and St. Stephen‘s, Culloden with oversight for St. Charles Dereham Centre, will be inducted Sunday, June 24th at 3 pm by the Ven. Dr. Jim Sutton.

All Saints, Peterborough, OntarioBill GrayThe Reverend Bill Gray will be inducted as rector of All Saints, Peterborough of the Diocese of Toronto this Sunday, June 10 at 4 pm.

He has been an Anglican priest for 25 years having served as rector of 5 different parish churches in the Diocese of Huron: Trinity Cambridge; St. Stephen’s, Gorrie and Trinity, Fordwich (now part of Parish of the Resurrection); St. Jude’s, Brantford; All Saints’ Windsor. He has served the Diocese of Huron as Regional Dean and as a member of the Cathedral Chapter of Canons. At the time of his appointment to Peterborough, the Venerable Bill Gray was the Archdeacon of Essex as well as the Rector of All Saints’ Windsor.

Trinity Church, Port Burwell

Adele MilesTrinity Church, Port Burwell, OntarioThe Rev Adele Miles will be inducted as incumbent of Trinity Church, Aylmer and incumbent of Trinity Church, Port Burwell and St. Luke's, Vienna on Thursday June 7 at 7 p.m. at Trinity Church in Aylmer. The Ven. Ken Anderson, Rector of St. Mark’s Church, Brantford and Archdeacon of Brant/Norfolk/Oxford, will be officiating on behalf of the bishop. Clergy are welcome to vest the colour being green. The service will be preceded by a pot luck supper beginning at 5pm in the church hall, Aylmer.

Trinity Church, Port Burwell is one of the Talbot Settlement Churches with its first service conducted February 22, 1836. The church remained in its original form until 1909 when it was re-seated, reglazed, re-shingled and redecorated. In 1978, the spire was demolished during a severe storm. The replacement spire is shorter than the original.
