On Saturday, March 28, 2009, the Very Rev'd Terry Dance was elected Suffragan Bishop of Huron. He has been Rector of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, Ontario since 2001.

The first log church in Woodhouse was built in 1821. The church was shortly destroyed by fire and a new church, with steeple and belfry, was built in 1824. It was destroyed by fire in 1874 and the new St John's was completed in 1875. This church burned in 1912 and the present church was constructed and consecrated in 1914.

Bishop Bob Bennett's first parish assignment was in 1974 as Deacon in Charge of St John's, Woodhouse, St John's, Simcoe and Memorial Church, Port Ryerse.

The church was completed in 1834 shorthly after the founding of Woodstock. It was financed through the efforts of Admiral Henry Vansttart and constructed under the direction of of his agent, Captain Andrew Drew. The Admiral also pledged maintenance of its first incumbent, the Rev. William Bettridge, who served the congregation 1834-79. During the rebellion of 1837 the building became a temporary jail for prisoners captured by local militia. St Paul's was consecrated in 1838 by Bishop George J. Mountain. The chancel was added to the original structure in 1843 and the transepts in 1851.

The rector is the Rev'd Bruce Genge who is also the regional Dean of Oxford.

St. John's, Desboro, Ontario

Desboro is a village about 15 miles south of Owen Sound in Chatsworth Township. A log schoolhouse erected in 1856 was Desboro's first building. It was known as Brown's School House, and the location was called Brown's Corners. George Smith built the first dwelling and store at the place in 1866. For a while the settlement was konwn as Donnybrook. It was named after Desborough in England when a post office was opened in 1869.

The red brick church was built in 1886 and dedicated for service the following year. The Belfry was added in 1925 but in 1984 was found to be unsafe. The bell is now on a cement pad north of the walkway. The church has eight stained glass side windows, as well as the two over the Altar.

St John's is part of a parish with St. Paul's Church, Chatsworth. The Rev'd Anne Mills is rector.

St John-in-the-Wilderness Church, Brights Grove

St. John-in-the-Wilderness Anglican church is on the shores of Lake Huron. The church was built in 1856 and was the second Anglican church to be established in the Sarnia area. At the time the church was built the land was cedar swamp. This is why the name was given to this pioneer church.

The property was established by Henry Jones who was given a 10,000 acre tract of land along Lake Huron shores in 1827. He brought a colony of sixty people from Paisley, Scotland in 1828 to build a back-settlers camp at the mouth of the Perche Creek, now the site of St. John-in-the-Wilderness Church.

With Christ Church, Camlachie about 8 km to the west, St John's forms the Lakeshore Parish. The Rev'd Jenny Sharp, previously Deacon Assistant at ELAM, was appointed deacon in charge December 1, 2008.

St James Anglican, St Marys, Ontario

St James Anglican Church in St Marys, Ontario was consecrated in 1859. Twenty-seven years later in 1886 the small stone building had extensive renovations raising the roof and adding the square tower, the buttresses and the west entrance porch. Three years later the rectory was built behind the church. The parish hall just to the north of the church was built in 1907. The smaller additions to the church of a sanctuary and a vestry were made in 1928 and 1965.

The parishes of St Paul's, Kirkton and St James merged in 1996. Since May 2001 the rector has been the Reverend Dr.
Dalice Sim.

Holy Trinity Church, Chatham

The parish was founded in 1875, chiefly to serve the growing number of immigrant families who were coming to Chatham, Ontario to work in the city’s manufacturing industry.

Isaac Hellmuth, the second Bishop of Huron, under whose guidance the parish began, was himself a Lithuanian Jew and a convert to Christianity. Hellmuth's most lasting accomplishment was the establishment of what is now the University of Western Ontario in 1878. He was its first chancellor and its major financial supporter.

The Pipe Organ is of three manuals plus pedals, consisting of 1700 pipes in 30 ranks. The most notable feature will be the brass 'Trompette en Chamade' located over the ambulatory door. The builder was the firm of Pole & Kingham.

The Rev'd Alan Knight was appointed rector of Holy Trinity, Chatham in September 2008. Ordained in 1986, his previous appointment was as Priest in Charge of St. John the Evangelist, Sault Ste Marie and St. John's, Garden River in the Diocese of Algoma.

Talbot Settlement Churches

Thomas Talbot was born at Castle Malahide, Ireland in 1771, a member of the Anglo-Irish nobility. He came to Canada on a military commission and explored what was then known as Upper Canada with John Graves Simcoe. In 1803 Colonel Talbot was granted 5,000 acres along the north shore of Lake Erie. He then set in motion an aggressive settlement plan, insisting that the people to whom he donated land clear the property and build dwellings. They did not receive the final deed to the land until this was done. In all, 27 settlements were established.

Land for churches was given directly by Talbot or by his associates. The four surviving churches are similar in design, and are known as The Talbot Settlement Churches.

Shown is Old St Thomas Church, St Thomas that was constructed between 1822 and 1824. The frame church was used continuously until 1877 when the congregation moved to Trinity Church. In 1986, Old St Thomas was restored and is now available for rental.

St. Peter's Anglican Church, Tyrconnell was built in the autumn of 1827. Land for Christ Church, Port Stanley, Ontario was donated in 1826 but the church itself was not built until 1844. Trinity Church, Port Burwell, Ontario had its first service was conducted February 22, 1836.

The parish was established in 1856 and 5 years later built its first frame church. The present stone building was completed in 1876. In 1909, the bell tower, parish hall and connecting hallway were added.

The church has 4 stained glass windows that are made up of broken stained glass from churches bombed in World War 2. They serve as a memorial for Canadian men and women who served overseas. Shown is detail from a window made from the glass from Chichester Cathedral.

Christ Church is part of a 2-point parish with Trinity Church, Lambeth that also became part of London in 1993.

Rector is the Rev. Elaine Clark. Rev. Clark also chairs the Huron Church News Board, which is made up of clergy and lay from around the Diocese. The Board meets several times each year to brainstorm ideas, plan features, provide assistance and help to balance the budget of the diocese's monthly newspaper.

Bob Bennett Elected Bishop of Huron

On Saturday, October 25, the Rt. Rev. Robert Bennett was elected the 12th Bishop of Huron. On the second ballot, he received 111 votes from the clergy and 263 from the laity, Rev. Canon Christopher Pratt received 15 clergy and 45 lay votes. Dean Terry Dance, Archdeacon Richard Salt, Rev. Canon Kim Van Allen and Dean Peter Wall all dropped out after the first ballot.

Bishop Bennett has been Bishop of Norfolk, the Suffragan Bishop of Huron since 2002. Just before the election he answered the question What do you see as our Diocese’s greatest opportunity, and, its greatest challenge? by saying:

"We have just come through our 150th anniversary year as a diocese. Our sesquicentennial was an opportunity to celebrate who we are and what has shaped us as a diocesan family. We certainly did it well! We are also at the tail end of the 'Who is my neighbour?' study that will reveal in some detail who we are as the Huron of 2008. The challenge before us is to use the 'bounce' of the 150th and the detailed data contained within the study to garner the energy and hopefulness to actually make the journey God wills for us. The roadblocks are well known to all of us including lethargy, fatigue, aging congregants, too many old and inappropriately located buildings as well as a dearth of young persons and young adults. The initial response by the diocese to these challenges is rather exciting by adding three new ministries (youth-stewardship-congregational development). The next few years in our corporate life look very exciting."

The Rt. Rev. Robert Bennett is a nominee for Bishop of Huron in the election to be held this Saturday. He is the Suffragan Bishop of Huron (Bishop of Norfolk). He was elected Suffragan June 15, 2002 and consecrated Sept. 14, 2002, Holy Cross Day.

Archdeacon Richard Salt is a nominee for Bishop of Huron in the election to be held October 25. He is Archdeacon of Kent/Lambton and has been Rector of Trinity Church, Sarnia, Ontario since 1991.

Richard Salt graduated from Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec in 1971 with a B.A. in Economics. He then took Private Studies in Theology with the late Dr. R.L. Slater.

Archdeacon Salt was ordained deacon on September 15, 1974 and priest on June 26, 1977. His first posting was as Incumbent of St. Clement’s Mission (Center), a three point parish located on Quebec's Lower North Shore. In 1986, he then became Rector of St. Anne's Church, Richmond, Quebec (shown right). He was there for 5 years before assuming his current position in Sarnia.

Kimberly Dawn Van Allen

Rev. Canon Kim Van Allen is nominated for Bishop of Huron. She is presently Rector of All Saints' Church, Windsor, Ontario. The electoral synod will be held on October 25, 2008 at St Paul's Cathedral.

Canon Kim Van Allen was raised in Kitchener and London, Ontario. She graduated from University of Western Ontario in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then worked for 15 years for Bell Canada becoming Manager, Network Provisioning, managing a budget larger than that of the Diocese of Huron.

In 1997, she received a Master of Divinity degree from Huron University College. She was ordained deacon on May 15, 1997 and a priest on November 27, 1997. Her first appointment was as Assistant Curate, New St. Paul's Church, Woodstock (now called the Church of the Epiphany). From February 2000 to February 2004, she was rector of St. George's, Middlesex Centre & Grace Church, Ilderton (shown right). In February 2004, she became Rector of the Church of St. Alban the Martyr, London, Ontario and in November 2007, assumed her current position at All Saints'.

Peter Allan Wall

The Very Rev. Peter Wall is one of 6 nominees for election as the 12th Bishop of Huron. He is Dean of the Diocese of Niagara and Rector of Christ's Church Cathedral, Hamilton (shown right).

Peter Wall was born in Kingston, Ontario and raised in London, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta. In 1979, he received a Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree from the University of Toronto then in 1989, a Master of Divinity degree (with Distinction) from the University of Western Ontario.

Dean Wall was ordained a deacon on May 17, 1989 and priested on November 30, 1989. His first appointment was St. Mark's-by-the-Lake, St. Clair Beach where he was Deacon in Charge, July - December 1989 and Rector, December 1989 - July 1993. He was Rector of Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church, London from July 1993 - November 1998 before moving to his current position.

Dean Wall is presently the Anglican Co-Chair of the Lutheran-Anglican Joint Commission, Canada; Diocesan Liturgical Officer, Diocese of Niagara; member of the Diocese of Niagara Synod Council; a director of the Anglican Foundation of Canada; Chaplain, Hamilton Fire Department; and Chaplain, Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

Dean Wall is one of the Three Cantors. For the group's contributions to community building, and to fund-raising to alleviate world hunger, Dean Wall was made an Honorary Life Member, The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund and also Honorary Senior Fellow, Renison College.

St Mark's, London, Ontario

St Mark's, London began in 1908 as an outreach project of St. Matthew's Anglican Church in the area then known as Pottersburg. A mission was established in a storefront. The current building, constructed in 1965, is the third physical location of the parish.

In 1997, St Mark's talked with St Barnabas' and St Timothy's about amalgamating. The Church of the Resurrection and St Matthew's joined the talks and when St Mark's withdrew those 4 churches merged to become the East London Anglican Ministries. St Mark's has continued as a small but stable parish but with a congregation of about 55 families.

The first St. Jude's Anglican Church opened June 10, 1954 in London Township. The population in the area grew and in 1961, the area was annexed by the City of London. Growth continued and the parish is now at the center of a very large residential area.

In 1986, The Rev. John H. Chapman became rector. He went on to be Dean of Theology, Huron University College and is now Bishop of Ottawa.

With continued population growth, a larger building was needed. June 1, 1993, with the completion of a new building, service began in the old church and then the congregation proceeded to the new facility to complete the liturgy and officially begin worship.

Christ Church, Listowel

The church was built to replace a frame building erected in 1863 and destroyed by fire in 1896. The Gothic-style church features narrow, arched stained-glass windows, wall dormers and a heavy stone foundation. The rectory was built in 1921 and a church hall in 1930.

Church of the Holy Saviour, Waterloo

The Church of the Holy Saviour will be open to the public Saturday, Sep 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the Doors Open Ontario program. The church is noteworthy for an abundance of unusually rich, carved-oak woodwork, including panelling, choir stalls and pews, a chancel screen, a pulpit and lectern, and a reredos carving of the Last Supper, all by Globe Furniture of Waterloo.

The parish began as a mission of St John's, Kitchener with the first service held in Presbyterian Church of Waterloo in 1895. The following year the services were held in a hall in the Snyder Building. Holy Saviour Church was built in 1898, the parish hall was built in 1912 and the tower completed in 1936.

Trivitt Memorial, Exeter, Ontario

Trivitt Memorial Church, Exeter was built in 1888, paid for by Thomas Trivitt, Justice of the Peace in Huron County.
The bell tower stands 92 feet high and houses a chime of 20 bells. Trivitt Memorial replaced the first Anglican Church in Exeter, Christ Church, built in 1860, that after the new church was built was used as a display building at the annual fair until it was torn down in 1939.

In the church are the colours of 161st (Huron) Battalion, a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, that recruited from Huron County. It was formed Dec. 2, 1915 in London, Ontario and eventually joined the 14th Brigade, 5th Division in Feb 1917.

Rev. Brad Dunbar became rector of Trivitt Memorial, Exeter and St. John-by-the-Lake, Grand Bend (with priestly oversight for St.Patrick's, Saintsbury) on June 4, 2008. He had been appointed lay pastor in January.

St Aidan's Church, London is one of two active Anglican churches in the Diocese of Huron named after the Irish monk, the other is St Aidan's, Windsor, Ontario. The saint was born around 600 and became the first Bishop of Lindisfarne in 635. He founded the monastery on Holy Island off the northeast coast of England and from there converted Northumbria to Christianity. He died August 31, 651.

Associate Rectors at St Aidan's Church are the Rev. Fr. D. Jay Koyle and The Rev. Dr. Todd Townshend who share responsibility for leadership in pastoral care, teaching, and the preaching and sacramental ministries. Rev Koyle served as Rector of St. Aidan's from December 1995 until July 2002, when he and Rev. Dr. Townshend began their ministry together as Associates. The shared responsibility allows both to teach at the Faculty of Theology at Huron University College, Rev. Koyle is Lecturer in Liturgics while Rev. Dr. Townshend teaches Homiletics (Preaching).

St Mark's Anglican, Brantford, Ontario

The first St Mark's was erected in 1953. The congregation moved to the current location when the present building was constructed in 1965.

In 1978, Christopher Wallis of London, Ontario designed the stained glass windows. The window shown left was presented by the 38th Brantford Scouts, Cubs, Venturers & Beavers and the 23rd Brantford Guides and Brownies commemorating
the 70th Anniversary of Scouting in Canada. In 2001, after the nave was enlarged, 'Calming of the Storm' (right), also by Christopher Wallis, was added.

St Stephen's, Oldcastle, Ontario

Oldcastle, Ontario is on the southern outskirts of Windsor. St. Stephen's was established in 1841 as a mission of St John's Anglican, Sandwich, Ontario with services taking place on a farm. In 1871 a frame building was constructed and in 1913 the present brick church was commenced immediately to the north of it and consecrated in 1921.

Trinity Church, Blenheim, Ontario

Blenheim, Ontario was incorporated into a town in 1885 and is now part of Chatham-Kent.

Trinity Church, Blenheim, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The congregation was formed in 1858 with a small, wood-frame church built. In 1882, the current, stone building in Blenheim's downtown replaced that structure. A reformed, independent church is still using the original building. Trinity's Sesquicentennial banquet was on May 17th and Bishop Bruce Howe led a worship service the following day. The church is having other events and will publish a commemorative booklet that may be purchased by contacting the church office at 519-676-2081.

Trinity, Bleiheim along with St. Paul's, Erieau and Grace Church in the Rondeau Government Park form the Parish of Rondeau Bay. Rev. David Fuller became the rector February 1, 2007.

Bishop Announces Retirement After 40 Years of Ministry

The Right Rev. Bruce Howe has announced his retirement as Anglican Bishop of Huron, effective Sept. 1, 2008.

Bishop Howe has given his entire life to the church he loves, including 40 years in ordained ministry. Howe was ordained in Nova Scotia and after some work in the Diocese of Toronto, went back to Nova Scotia for several years. He returned to Ontario in 1988 as Dean of Huron and Rector of St. Paul’s Cathedral. He was elected and consecrated as the 11th Bishop of Huron in 2000. Bishop Howe is known for his tireless style of ministry and his constant care for God’s people. Fond of saying, "God is good to Huron", Howe's ever present smile and outgoing personality are hallmarks of how he has been good to the second largest Diocese in the Anglican Church of Canada. Bishop Howe is currently on a planned sabbatical leave.

The Right Rev. Robert Bennett, Suffragan (Assistant) Bishop of Huron says,

"It is difficult to contemplate Bishop Bruce not being at the helm of the diocese. His ever present faith, vision and energy have profoundly affected every facet of diocesan life and witness. As he transitions to the next phase of life’s journey, his Huron family wishes him God’s speed. As a personal friend and Episcopal colleague these past years, I shall miss him deeply and wish he and his family nothing but a wonderful retirement."

Memorial Church, Port Ryerse, Ontario

Port Ryerse is on the north shore of Lake Erie on Young's Creek. Samuel Ryerse built the first mill about 1797 that was burned down by invading Americans during the War of 1812. The local shipping industry was the foundation for the village and prospered most during the mid-1800s, exporting lumber and grain.

Memorial Church, Port Ryerse is in the 4-point Long Point Bay Parish with St. John's Church, Port Rowan, St. John's Church, Woodhouse and the summer congregation of St. Andrew's-by-the-Lake, Turkey Point. The parish also included St. William Church, St. William's that closed and had its deconsecration service on January 28, 2007.

St Martin-in-the Fields, London, Ontario

The first service of St. Martin-in-the Fields, London, Ontario was held on Sunday, November 6th, 1955 in the rectory on West Mile Road. By March 1957 the present church building (worship area) was built and was officially opened and dedicated by the the sixth Bishop of Huron, the Rt. Rev. George Nasmith Luxton, on April 20, 1957. In 1963, additions were made which included Congress Hall and a new narthex and cloakroom. as well as the extension of the sanctuary area. An elevator was installed in 1999 making the church wheelchair accessible.

St. Martin-in-the Fields is in the Medway deanery. Its rector is Rev Canon Sid Smithson.

St James', Cambridge, Ontario

St James Anglican Church began in 1882 as a mission of Trinity Anglican Church, Galt. The first services were conducted in the Royal Templars' Hall then later in the Temperance Hall. The Parish of St. James was organized in 1884 and 9 years later the cornerstone was laid for a church building. That building at 30 Harvey Street, Hespeler was dedicated on October 28, 1893 by Bishop Maurice Baldwin of the Diocese of Huron. The first church was closed in 1990 when the current building was erected at 520 Ellis Road.

Rector is the Rev. Canon George Ferris who was in charge of the committee planning for last year's Diocese of Huron's Sesquicentenial Service at the John Labatt Centre.

Holy Trinity Anglican, Lucan, Ontario

The village of Lucan, Ontario is 22km northwest of London and since 1999 part of the township of Lucan Biddulph (2006 pop. 4,187). A $510,000 museum on local history is being built that will open next May. The best known historical event is the 1880 massacre of five of the Black Donnellys on a farm just outside the village.

On June 22, Holy Trinity Church, Lucan will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the present building. There will be a worship service at 10:00 a.m. followed by a dinner at 12:30 p.m.

Rector is Rev. Sue McCullough. Holy Trinity is in a 2-point charge with St James Church, Clandeboye located 4 km west of Lucan.

St James Anglican, Parkhill, Ontario

Regular Anglican services began in 1869 conducted by a theological student in a wooden structure. The present building was erected in 1874 with the bell-tower and the Parish Hall built in 1914.

St. Paul's, Point Edward, Ontario

Point Edward (2006 pop 2,019) is adjacent to Sarnia, Ontario. It sits opposite Port Huron, Michigan at the mouth of the St. Clair River that it is linked to by the Blue Water Bridge, built in 1938 and twinned in 1997.

This Anglican church was built in 1868. In 1902, the building was moved to its present location by teams of horses. In 1956, a parish hall was erected at the rear of the church.

St. Paul's Point Edward has been long-time known as the Mariner's Church. In 2006, Rev. Grace Coleman Anthony was appointed the first chaplain of Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, Central and Arctic Region. The CCGA's main purpose is search and rescue. It is a volunteer organization and most often, their members arrive first on a scene to aid in a time of distress.

St. Alban's, Delhi, Ontario

Delhi, originally known as Fredericksburg, is at the center of Ontario's tobacco industry. The Delhi Tobacco Museum and Heritage Centre displays its agricultural and cultural history.

St. Alban's Anglican Church, Delhi was built in 1879, the parish hall in 1939 and a new rectory in 1957. Since 1979, it has been part of a two-point parish with St. John's, Otterville.

Current rector, the Rev'd Zena Attwood, has written the bishop to indicate she is retiring effective the end of July with her last Sunday being the end of June. Her ministry will be recognized at the Synod banquet on Monday May 26.

Trinity Anglican, Waterford, Ontario

Waterford, Ontario is part of Norfolk County. The area surrounding the town is primarily agricultural land, with tomatoes, tobacco and corn among the chief crops.

Trinity Anglican, Waterford (right) was erected in 1909 and by 1917, was consecrated debt-free.

April 10, a fire destroyed Waterford United Church built in 1855. The blaze was caused by hot tar used by roofers fixing a leak in the addition to the church. The Trinity Anglican and Waterford United congregations held a joint service April 13. Arrangements are being made for the United Church to use the Anglican building until their church is rebuilt.

Rev. Darlene Cunliffe, previously Assistant Curate, St John the Evangelist, Kitchener was appointed priest in charge (3/4 time) of Trinity, Waterford and All Saints', Mt. Pleasant January 14, 2007.

Also in Waterford is St. Barnabas, the only Anglican Coalition in Canada church in Ontario. It started in late 2006 and rents space to worship at the St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The ACiC is opposed to the blessing of same sex marriage. Its sponsoring province is the Episcopal Church of Rwanda. The group is planning to grow by planting new churches.

St Columba Anglican, Waterloo, Ontario

St Columba Anglican (right) is the only church in the Diocese of Huron named after the Irish/Scottish saint.

St Columba was born at Gartan in Donegal in 521 and was taught at the Clonard monastery and school. After he was priested, Columba founded several monasteries including one in Londonderry and another in Durrow, county Offaly. He left Ireland during a civil war with 12 companions and in 563 landed on the island of Iona, Scotland. There he built a monastery, of which Columba became the abbot. Although he visited Ireland again, his chief work was converting the people of Scotland to Christianity. He died in 597 and was buried on Iona, although his remains were later taken to Ireland.

Rector of St Columba Anglican is Rev Dana Rodgers. It was in a 2-point parish with St. Aidan's Church, Elmira (left) until it closed in 2007. A service of thanksgiving and the deconsecration of St. Aidan's, Elmira took place on September 12, 2007.

St Mark-by-the-Lake, St. Clair Beach

St Clair Beach, Ontario is a community in the Town of Tecumseh, just east of Windsor.

St Mark-by-the-Lake Anglican has a growing congregation with most of the 2 Sunday services exceeding 75% of seating. As a result, the Church and Parish Hall is undergoing an $800,000 expansion (model shown below). The roof to the attached parish hall will be raised adding a half-storey with 3400 sq ft of space and the church will be widened adding about 3600 sq ft.

The 8am service is traditional while the 10:30am service is contemporary. There is also a service at 10:30am on Wednesdays. The rector is the Rev'd Kevin George who since March 2006 has been posting 'random thoughts from the vicar' to the Revy Kevy's Corner.

Diocese of Huron Children's Festival

One of the ongoing events that have been a continuing success for over 35 years is the Diocese of Huron's Children's Festival. This special event for children ages 4 to 12 constantly reinvents itself to meet the spiritual needs of each generation while standing as an example of Christian love and service within the context of the "greater" church.

This year's Children's Festival will be held on Saturday, 10 May 2008, and once again will be a tri-regional event. There will be simultaneous programs taking place at St. Paul's Cathedral, London, Ontario; in Essex Deanery at Christ Church, Amherstburg (shown right); and in the Saugeens at St. George's Anglican, Owen Sound.

The theme for this years' Diocesan Children’s Festival is "God Loves All the Children of the World" with a focus on taking care of God's creation and each other.

Phyllis Lucas Retirement

Christ Church, Markdale is in a 2-point parish with the smaller congregation of St. Mary's Anglican, Maxwell (left). The rector is the Rev'd Yvonne Summerfield.

The village of Markdale has a population of about 1400. In 2001 it amalgamated with Artemesia, Euphrasia and Osprey to form the Municipality of Grey Highlands. It is home to several industries including Chapman's Ice Cream and has an annual Ice Cream Festival in August.

Christ Church, Lion's Head, Ontario

Christ Anglican Church, Tara, Ontario

Tara is in Bruce County and since 1999 has been in the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie formed when Arran, Elderslie, Chesley, Tara and Paisley, Ontario amalgamated.

Christ Church, Tara is in a 3-point parish with Holy Trinity, Chesley and Church of the Ascension, Paisley. Rector is Rev. Linda Nixon who is also chair of the Diocese of Huron's EnviroAction Committee. The committee's aim is to help the people of Huron do their bit to help heal the planet both in the parishes and in life outside the church.

On Saturday April 19th to celebrate Earth Day EnviroChallenge Day will take place from 10am to 3pm at the Huron Church Camp, Bayfield, Ontario.

The Diocese of Huron's EnviroAction Committee, the Diocesan Children and Youth Ministry Working Group, and Huron Church Camp are presenting the event which is open to young people aged from 11-15 years. The cost is $10 with a registration deadline of April 10. Over the day music, stories, prayers, food and fellowship will be shared ending with a joyful celebration of the Eucharist. St Jude's, Mt Brydges, Ontario

St Jude's, Mt Brydges joined the Parish of St. John's Church, Glencoe and Christ Church, Newbury in 2001. Rector is the Rev'd Christine Crawford.

On Sunday March 30 from 7-9 pm, St Judes is sponsoring a benefit concert at Hope Christian Reformed Church, 22636 Adelaide Rd, Mt Brydges. Proceeds will go towards helping rebuild the "Igloo Church", St Jude's Cathedral, Iqaluit. Cost is $10 per person with music by Route 66, In A Heartbeat, Caradoc Community Choir and Milestone.

St. Jude's, the Cathedral of the Diocese of the Arctic, (seen below in 1995 photo) was structurally damaged by an arson fire November 5, 2005 and as a result had to be demolished in 2006.

The cathedral is to be rebuilt. The original building, completed in 1972, was built to resemble an igloo and the new cathedral will retain the familiar igloo shape of its predecessor. The cost of the new cathedral is estimated to be $5.7 million. The Diocese of the Arctic received approximately $770,000 towards reconstruction from the insurance and is making an appeal both within and beyond the borders of the Arctic, and both within and beyond the borders of the Anglican denomination, to raise the additional funds needed.

Elsewhere in the diocese, last year the Anglican Church Women of St. John the Evangelist Church, Kitchener, Ontario started a 'stocking' project for St Jude's Cathedral. Everyone in the parish was given a little stocking and was asked to save quarters throughout the year. There was a cute little verse and instructions as to how many quarters should be put in each month. By December, each stocking had $20.00 in it. They were able to send a cheque for $1,000.

St Aidan's, Windsor, Ontario

Last month, the Congregation and Leadership of St Aidan's Anglican Church, Windsor, Ontario voted to become an Anglican Essentials Network parish.

In September 2005 the Congregation and Leadership of St. Aidan's Anglican Church, Windsor, Ontario ascribed to the Statement of faith found in the Montreal Declaration of Anglican Essentials Canada. St Aidan's had outlined their concerns over the direction of the Anglican Church of Canada in a brochure that said:

1. GENERAL SYNOD'S MOTION TO AFFIRM …..
At its general meeting (Synod) in June, 2004,the Anglican Church of Canada made two decisions by majority vote that challenge the foundational beliefs that we have at St. Aidan's. The first is a motion declaring adult same sex relationships as being holy. Our problem is simply that such a statement implies that the moral exhortations in Scripture encouraging holy living are declared by the Church to be in error. We cannot agree.

2. CHANGES TO THE MARRIAGE CANON (CANON XXI)
The second is a dilution of the standards surrounding Christian marriage. We believe that marriage is a gift from God, and we receive the gift by coming in repentance and faith into His presence. The Anglican Church of Canada has removed the requirement of application for remarriage in the Church, and allows for marriages outside the Church building. At St. Aidan's, in order to uphold our biblical understanding of marriage, we have instituted our own pastoral procedures for re-marriage, and insisted on the Church as being the place where marriage ceremonies will be held.

St. George's, Goderich, Ontario

Goderich, Ontario is on the shore of Lake Huron. The townsite, laid out in 1829, has wide streets radiating from a central octagonal square. The present St. George's Anglican, Goderich, one block north of the square, was opened St. George's Day 1881 replacing a frame building burned in 1879.

The church was built with its spire placed at the street intersection for greatest visibility, resulting in the church having a west rather than the more usual east orientation. Also unusual in an Anglican church is the floor sloping towards the pulpit, a feature more common in Methodist churches.

The Parish Hall was built as a separate structure in 1882, and was joined to the church in 1924. The window shown right illustrates "Suffer the little children to come unto me" and is in the baptistery, which was originally the front door. It was manufactured by Wippell's in England.

St. George's is a 2-point parish with Christ Church, Port Albert, which is about 15km north of Goderich. Rector is the Rev. Allan Livingstone.

Sesquicentennial Service DVD

The Diocese of Huron's 150th Service of Celebration now available on DVD. The celebration Eucharist, held in London, Ontario at the John Labatt Centre (JLC) included the entire Anglican House of Bishops and many dignitaries from various denominations. Also included, about 9,000 worshippers from the diocese supported by First Nations and liturgical dancers, a 410 voice choir and amazing music.

St. Paul's Anglican, Port Dover, Ontario

Port Dover has a population of about 5,500. It is located in Long Point Bay on the north shore of Lake Erie.

Each year,on the first Sunday in March, St. Paul's hosts the annual Fishermen’s Service. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate a very important aspect of life in Port Dover, commercial fishing. Port Dover's fishing industry at one time hosted the largest freshwater fishing fleet in the world. St. Paul's Church pays tribute to those who made their living on the lake, and prayers are said for those who continue that tradition. The church is decorated with fishing nets, a ship's
wheel and various other items that are part of a fisherman's equipment.

St. James the Apostle, Wallaceburg, Ontario

Wallaceburg is a town of approximately 13,000 nestled on the banks of the Sydenham River, 25 km north of Chatham and 50 km south of Sarnia and within a fifteen minute drive of Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River.

The Church of St. James the Apostle is the oldest church in Wallaceburg, founded in 1864. It has a beautiful nave and sanctuary and can seat approximately 220 parishioners. St. James has been blessed with two large halls, Steinhoff and St. James, both wheelchair accessible as well as spacious Sunday School rooms and a well-equipped nursery.

St. James Anglican, Ingersoll, Ontario

Ingersoll, Ontario was first settled by Major Thomas Ingersoll in 1793 who was promised some 80,000 acres of land in the present Oxford County for himself and a group of American associates. He brought a number of settlers into this area before the government revoked the agreement in 1797 and Ingersoll moved away in 1805. His son Charles (1791-1831) a veteran of the War of 1812 and a half-brother of Laura Secord, acquired the Oxford family homestead in 1817. He became a leading citizen of the pioneer community known at first as Oxford but later re-named Ingersoll.

The first services for St. James' parish were held in the schoolhouse in 1834, 18 years before Ingersoll was incorporated as a village in 1852. Three members of the first council were also members of St. James' parish. A new church building was proposed in 1865 and the present building was completed in 1869.

Today, the congregation numbers 250 families and individuals. The rector is the Rev. Jim Carr. On January 31, 2008, Ted Winter was ordained a deacon (non stipendiary) with special responsibilities for outreach ministry at St. James, Ingersoll.

Christ Church, London, Ontario

The Christ Church was erected and consecrated in 1863. Within two years the congregation grew to 600 members with a Sunday school of 350 children.

By 1965 the parish roll had decreased to 78 families and 92 individuals and the parish was in financial difficulty. Father Roland Palmer became priest in charge who before his retirement 2 years later revitalized the parish. By 1970 the parish was again self-sufficient.

In October 1975 a fire in the church caused extensive damage. The congregation worshipped in the parish hall, built in 1879, until they were able to return to the refurbished church in March 1976.

Rector since August 1991 has been Rev Canon Greg Smith who is Chair of the Huron Hunger Fund and was named to the Cathedral Chapter of Canons in 2007.

Ministry with children, with the economically disadvantaged, with persons affected by the prejudices and stigmas of society have resulted in ministries such as the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Homework Centre, a monthly Community Breakfast, participation in the Ecumenical Refugee Support Group, volunteering at Camp Wendake for people, families and caregivers affected by HIV/AIDS, and Viriditas: a Centre for Creative Spirituality.

St John's Anglican, Sandwich, Ontario

The first St John's church was built in 1807 and destroyed by the Kentucky Mounted Riflemen in the war of 1812. The church was rebuilt in 1818 and the current church built in 1872. St. John's, Sandwich, is the mother church of eight other parishes, including the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit, Michigan. Seven of those eight parishes are still open and holding worship services on a regular basis.

In 1935, Sandwich was one of the four communities amalgamated to form the City of Windsor, Ontario.

Current projects of the parish include the food bank, the Mission to Seamen and the seniors' housing project. Rector is Rev Bill Bradley. Sunday services are 8:00am and 10:00am and there is a Wednesday service at 10:00am.

Holy Trinity Anglican, St George, Ontario

St George, Ontario is just north of Brantford. The Holy Trinity congregation was established in 1954. Services at first were held in a local school then the current church building was constructed with the first service held in June 1956.

Until 1967 Holy Trinity was in a 2-point with St. Mark's Anglican, Brantford. After a rectory was acquired Holy Trinity was made a single point charge. In 1983 it was tied to St. Luke's, Cambridge. In 1987 an arrangement was made with St. James, Paris where a curate would live in the rectory in St. George and Holy Trinity would share the cost of the curacy with St. James. This arrangement lasted until 1991 when Holy Trinity became a single point charge again.

In 2004, Holy Trinity Anglican celebrated its 50th anniversary. As an anniversary project the church's volunteer gardeners created a Meditative Garden.

Rev. Margaret Shortell has been Priest in Charge since June 2004.

St George's, Blue Mountains, Ontario

The Rev. Canon Stephen Haig, previously the rector of St. John the Evangelist, Leamington, has been appointed the rector of St. George's Anglican, Blue Mountains (formerly Clarksburg) effective January 15, 2008. Rector for the past six years, the Rev. Canon Ben Burry's conducted his final service at St. George's Anglican on Sunday, July 8th, 2006, retiring after celebrating the 40th anniversary of his ordination.

The first St George's was a frame building erected in 1862. It was replaced by the present brick structure constructed on the same site and completed in 1899. In 1980, an addition was built, providing a meeting room, nursery, rector's study and washrooms.

An ongoing ministry is to Mexican migrant workers. Every summer the Mexicans work in the area's apple orchards and although most are Roman Catholic, they have been welcomed at St. George's in the absence of a Roman Catholic church in the community. They frequently participate in Sunday services by reading the Gospel in Spanish and the St. George's congregation has learned the appropriate Spanish responses.

Church of the Transfiguration, London, Ontario

The Church of the Transfiguration is located in northwest London Ontario, close to the University of Western Ontario. It began as a mission of St. George's Anglican Church, Wharncliffe Rd in 1958 meeting in the Orchard Park School. The first full time incumbent was appointed in 1960. Construction of the building began in the fall of 1961 and the congregation moved in March 1962.

An anonymous donation made it possible to build a church. Designed by Philip Carter Johnson, it has the parish hall in the basement and a church on the upper level.

Doors (left) were created by A. A. Fatouros representing the transfiguration. From top clockwise, Jesus Christ - the fish with a cross; St. John - the winged serpent rising out of the challis; Moses and Elijah - the tablets showing the ten commandments; St. Peter - the three golden keys and St. James - the three clam shells and the raised sword. The weather damaged the doors and they now hang in the church office.

St James' on-the-Hill, Brantford

The ministry began in 1881 with cottage services and Sunday school conducted by the Archdeacon from Grace Church, Brantford. By 1881 the parish had its first priest and was aligned with Saint Paul's in Holmedale. In 1918, the parish became self-supporting and constructed the present building which was dedicated in March 1920. In the 1933 St James was once again aligned with St Paul's but has been self-supporting since the Second World War.

Originally in a rural area the church is now part of the city which has grown around it. The parish hall, with stage and kitchen facilities, is active with weekday social clubs and evening meetings of the scouting and guiding movements.

Rector is the Rev. Heather Robinson who is Regional Dean for Brant/Norfolk.

St John the Evangelist, London, Ontario

The parish of St. John the Evangelist was founded in 1864 with services conducted in variety of places until 1888 when the present building was constructed. In 1897 the spire was erected. In 2002, a major restoration project upgraded the walls, roof, stained glass windows and bell tower.

Clergy are Rev Canon Don Ford, Rev Rob Luxton and Rev Patricia Dobbs-Luxton.

An Old Fashioned New Year's Eve takes place again this year. Tickets are $30 (children under 16 free) available at the church office. The dance will be lead by Guelph band Relative Harmony with fiddle, mandolin, guitar and keyboard. Finger foods all evening and New Year is welcomed with champagne and desserts.

Church of the Epiphany, Kingsville, Ontario

Kingsville, Ontario (2006 pop. 20,908) is 30 km from Windsor on the north shore of Lake Erie.

The congregation, orinally named St John's, was formed in 1852 and a oak log church built. This original building became the parish hall when the current church was built in 1891.

The name of the Parish was changed from St. John's to Epiphany, to commemorate the day the sod was turned in January 1891. In June, 1891 the cornerstone was laid by former Rector, Rev J W Ashman whose son is buried in front of the south wall of the church. On All Saints Day, Nov 1, 1891, Bishop Maurice Baldwin dedicated the church.

Behind the church in the cemetery is a Black Oak tree that is several hundred years old. Buried in the cemetery are many notable figures from Kingsville's history, including the King family. Colonel King was not only the town founder but also the first Warden of the parish.

The current rector is the Rev. Bryan Girling with honourary assistant Rev. Deacon Jane Piercy Ballard.

Christ Church, Dresden, Ontario

Dresden, Ontario is home to the provincial Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site. The museum is built on the site of the black settlement that fugitive slave and abolitionist Rev. Josiah Henson helped found in 1841. Rev. Thomas Hughes started his ministry in Dresden 1859. In May of the following year Bishop Benjamin Cronyn said of Rev. Hughes

"Mr. Hughes is most usefully employed with every prospect of success at Dresden. I have the utmost confidence in Mr. Hughes. I anticipate that much good will result from his ministry among the fugitive slaves. He is a man of such sound sense and a true Christian spirit."

In 1867, Hughes' seven-year-old son laid the cornerstone of Christ Church with the church being finished in October 1868. .

Since 2002 Christ Church, Dresden has been part of the 6-point Parish of the Transfiguration. The rector is Rev. Stephen Demitroff with honourary assistant, Rev. Michelle Collins-Wongkee.

Trinity Anglican, Cambridge, Ontario

The Gothic Revival sanctuary of Trinity Anglican Church was built from locally quaried limestone in 1844 in Galt (Galt, Preston and Hespeler amalgamated to become Cambridge in 1973). The town was mostly Presbyterian but town founders and Anglicans William Dickson and Absalom Shade made substantial donations to build their church. The church has been added to over the years with the Norman tower added in 1885. The church complex is on the Grand River and faces Trinity Park.

There are nearly 500 parishioners on the parish roll and there is a large Sunday School and Nursery as well as a youth program. A major community outreach, Trinity Community Table, serves hot lunches, without charge, 3 days per week, all year round.

St John's Anglican, St Thomas, Ontario

The first Anglican Church in St Thomas, Ontario was constructed between 1822 and 1824, about 12 years after the village was founded. Old St Thomas Church, which was used continuously until 1877, was restored in 1986 and can be rented.

Among the three still active Anglican Churches in St Thomas is St John's. It was built more than 130 years ago and a new parish hall was constructed in 1986. Porter Hall is available to the public for wedding receptions, banquets, and is used on a regular basis by groups in the community.

The Rev'd Jim Innes was appointed rector to St. John's, St. Thomas effective November 1st 2007. He has been providing ministry to the parish on a part time basis since December 2006.

150th Anniversary of the Diocese of Huron

More than 9,000 worshippers packed the John Labatt Centre, London, Ontario on Sunday to mark the 150th anniversary of the Diocese of Huron, in what may have been the largest religious gathering Southwestern Ontario has ever seen.

It marked 150 years to the day that on Wednesday, October 28, 1857 the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Cronyn, Rector of London, Canada West, was consecrated Bishop of Huron in the chapel of Lambeth Palace, London, England. The consecrating prelates were the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishops of Winchester, Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone. It was the first time in the Anglican world that clergy and laity had elected a Bishop. On July 9th, 1857, Dr. Cronyn had received 22 clerical votes and 24 lay votes while Archdeacon Alexander Bethune, later Bishop of Toronto, received 20 clerical and 10 lay.

Attending the event on Sunday were Anglican bishops from across Canada along with the Bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. The new Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Most Rev. Fred Hiltz was preacher and Bishops Howe and Bennett from Huron were concelebrants in the 3-hour celebration and worship service.

St. George's, Sarnia, Ontario

Earlier this year St. George's Anglican Church held a ground breaking ceremony for a link between the main church building and the Parish Hall. The link will be in keeping with the existing architectural features and make the buildings accessible to all. Within the new extension a barrier free washroom will be constructed.

Construction of the current St. George's Church began in 1883, and was competed in 1884. The new link is expected to cost about 3 times as much as the original church cost of $19,752.57. A bequest of a parishioner will cover a large part of the cost of the new construction.

London Ontario Archdeacon and Deans Appointed

The Rev'd Canon Dr. Tim Connor has been appointed Archdeacon of Middlesex effective November 1, 2007. The service of collation will take place on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at 7 p.m. at his church, St. George's, London (shown). The archdeaconery is made up of the deaneries of Brough and Medway. It covers the north part of London, Ontario and an area north and west of the city.

New Regional Deans for Wellington and Delaware have also been appointed. Wellington and Delaware form the Archdeaconery of Erie that covers the south part of London and west and south of the city.

The Rev'd Marian Haggerty, rector of Holy Trinity Church, London, is appointed Regional Dean of Wellington effective November 1.

The Rev'd Canon Sam Thomas, rector of St. Michael and All Angels, London, was appointed Regional Dean of Delaware effective October 1.

St. John the Divine, Arva, Ontario

The Anglican Church of St. John the Divine, Arva, is just outside the northern boundary of London, Ontario. This year it is celebrating the 185th anniversary. The first service was on July 28, 1822 and conducted by a travelling minister, the Rev. Charles James Stewart, who in 1825 was appointed the second Bishop of Quebec. About 250 people attended the service. The following year a church was erected replaced with the current building in 1875.

Rector Rev. Wendy Murray and Honorary Assistant Rev. Earl Leiska are leading anniversary observances and celebrations, planned by an anniversary committee, to take place almost monthly throughout the year. A parish dinner in October will have a strong commemorative theme, and there are plans for a recital featuring the new organ, closer to the Advent season. As their special contribution, late in the autumn teachers and children of the Sunday School will carry trowels into the garden to plant bulbs as symbolic 'Seeds for the Future'.

St James was built about 1839 with funds raised in parishes in Ireland and Scotland and a gift from the Duchess of Leeds. It was the first cobblestone building by Levi Broughton in Paris who went on to build another dozen cobblestone houses in the area that still stand. A fieldstone chancel was added in 1863 and the five-sided vestible erected in 1989-90.

St. James' received their present pipe organ in 1895, and the parish hall was officially opened by the Most Rev'd David Williams, fourth Bishop of Huron, in 1913.

Rev Michael Johnson leaves ELAM

The Right Reverend Barry B. Clarke, Bishop of Montreal, has appointed the Rev. Michael Johnson Incumbent, to the parish of Christ Church, Beaurepaire, effective November 1. The parish is located in the municipality of Beaconsfield, within the City of Montreal.

Michael is currently the rector of ELAM and Regional Dean for Wellington. During his ministry in Huron he has also been the rector of Trinity, St. Thomas; provided ministry to St. David’s and St. Paul’s, Brantford; St. John the Evangelist, Kitchener, the Parish of New Hamburg and Ayr and Holy Trinity, Brantford. Rev Johnson has been very active at the diocesan level over his years of ministry, including being on Diocesan Council, Imagine Huron and Administration and Finance.

ELAM, East London Anglican Ministries, was formed when East London churches Resurrection, St. Barnabas, St. Matthew's, and St. Timothy's amalgamated. The existing churches were sold and a new building constructed at 2060 Dundas St E, London.

Church of the Epiphany, Woodstock

This Saturday, Sep 8 from 10am to 4pm and Sunday, Sep 9 from 1pm to 4 pm, the Church of the Epiphany, Woodstock will one of many buildings open to the public in Oxford County as part of Doors Open Ontario. Another Anglican Church open the same hours is St John's, Otterville.

The Church of the Epiphany was formed when New St Paul's and Winniett, All Saints amalgamated after Winniet was deconsecrated in March 2006. In 1879, New St Paul's was built to replace Old St Paul's. In 1882, a portion of the congregation re-opened and moved back into the old building and today Old St Paul's remains an active parish.

The architecture of the Church of the Epiphany is neo-gothic. Inside are distinctive furnishings that are a unique blend of old and new and it has ornate stained glass windows. Outside the grounds of the Church of the Epiphany's Rectory have been enhanced by adding a Labyrinth, benches and several vegetable gardens.

The Curate, the Rev. Christine Downey, who with her family enhanced the grounds, is becoming Rector of Southern Trinity Parish (Christ Church, Colchester; St. Andrew's, Harrow and St. Alban's, Malden). She will be inducted by Bishop Bennett next Monday Sep 10 at 7pm at St. Andrew's, Harrow. The preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Dalice Sim, rector of St James' Church, St Marys and St Paul's, Kirkton.

St. Hilda-St. Luke's, Tyrconnell Swap Priests

On September 1, the Rev Patrick Byrne, currently Interim in the Parish of Tyrconnell, will become Incumbent of the Parish of St Hilda's-St Luke's, St. Thomas. The Rev Canon Brenda Clark, currently the rector of St. Hilda-St. Luke's, St. Thomas, will will provide part time Incumbency ministry to the Parish of Tyrconnell (St. Peter's Tyrconnell, Grace Church, West Lorne; Church of the Nativity, Dutton; St. Stephen's, Burwell Park).

Canon Clark was ordained in 1970 in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. In 1987 she came on the strength of the Diocese of Huron as rector of St. Stephen's Gorrie and Trinity, Fordwich. In 1989 she was appointed Regional Dean of Saugeen South and in 1990 Regional Dean of Saugeen North. Appointed rector of the parish of Christ Church, Meaford and St. James' Church, Fairmount in 1991 she held that appointment until 2001 when she was named to St Hilda's-St Luke's. In 1991 she was named to the Cathedral Chapter of Canons and in 1992 she was named Archdeacon of Saugeens. Upon moving to Delaware Deanery, she was twice appointed Regional Dean.

Rev Byrne is joining St Hilda's-St. Luke's as they celebrate their 50th and 90th Anniversaries. St Hilda's and St Luke's churches amalgamated in 1993 when the St. Luke's Church building was sold and parishioners joined with St Hilda's in its newly renovated church. A chapel was added to the building which includes the altar, some pews and many artifacts from St Luke's Church.

St John's, Glencoe, Ontario

The first Anglican services in Glencoe were conducted in 1846 by Rev John Gunne, travelling missionary based in Zone Mills (Florence) who ministered to people in adjacent Bothwell, Wardsville, Newbury, Glencoe and elsewhere. In 1861, services were moved from a private house to a new frame building which served as a school-house during the week and a church for protestant denominations on Sunday.

The first St John's Church was built in 1869. The current building was built on the same lot in 1893. Originally there was a bell tower over the main entrance but in the early 1950's the tower was condemned and had to be taken down.

The window shown is over the altar and was placed there in honour of Mrs W D Moss who had been the organist for many years and died in June 1915. The window depicts eleven Apostles gazing upwards at the Christ as He ascends into Heaven.

At various times through its history St John's has been aligned with other congregations and today is in a 3 point parish with Christ Church Newbury and St Jude's, Mt Brydges. Rector is Rev Christine Crawford.

Diocese of Brandon

Last October a covenant agreement entitled "Companions on the Journey" was signed establishing a five year partnership between the Diocese of Brandon and the Deanery of Essex. The agreement will encourage exchanges, visits, prayer partners, parish partners and sharing of resources. There will be exchanges of young adults and youth for such purposes as leading vacation bible schools. It is hoped respective colleges, Canterbury College, University of Windsor and Henry Budd College, La Pas will form partnerships.

The Diocese of Brandon covers approximately 100,000 square miles from the far north to the far south in western Manitoba along the Saskatchewan border; has many isolated communities especially in the north where many of the congregations and clergy are aboriginal.

The Deanery of Essex has 28 churches in Windsor, Ontario (2006 pop. 323,342) and the surrounding area. Although the Diocese of Brandon has far more territory than the Deanery of Essex, Brandon and Essex have relatively the same number of parishes and clergy.

St Thomas Anglican, Seaforth, Ontario

St. Thomas Anglican Church was the first permanent place of worship built in Seaforth. The frame building was constructed in 1863 with the chancel added in 1872 and wings were added in 1878 to provide more seating. In 1885, the congregation purchased, and moved, the old Methodist Episcopal Church building for use as a parish hall.

St Thomas Church along with St Paul's, Clinton and Trinity Church, Mitchell form the Parish of the Holy Spirit.

Next Monday, August 6, St Thomas will be one of many buildings in Seaforth open to the public from 10am to 4pm as part of the Ontario Doors Open program.

All Saints, Waterloo, Ontario

The history of All Saints' begins in 1958 when Holy Saviour Church, Waterloo established a Sunday School Mission which during 1959 became a separate mission parish. All Saints' got its first Church building in 1961. In 1981 All Saints' Anglican and the Waterloo North Presbyterian Church partnered to build the Laurel Church Centre which continues to be their home.

The rector is Rev Canon Robin Lyons who is also regional dean for Waterloo. Honourary Assistants are Rev Deacon Gordon Kennedy, Rev Deacon Robert Sicard.

St. George's, Middlesex Centre

The first St George's Church was a frame building erected in 1841 in what was then called London Township. The Rev. Charles Crosbie Brough, the first rector of St. George's, was in charge of the whole region and had come to Upper Canada as a pioneer missionary among the Indians of Manitoulin Island. The current St George's building opened on August 18, 1869.

This parish celebrated its sesquicentennial anniversary in 1991, when 5 new memorial stained glass windows were installed. Canon Littleford previously donated two of the windows: the Nativity in memory of his wife, and St. George in memory of his brother. During that year, the parish was visited by then Primate, the Most Rev Michael Geoffrey Peers (11th primate, 1986-2004).

St George's is in a 2-point parish with Grace Church, Ilderton. The 2 churches were first linked in 1906. The parish has also twinned with an Anglican parish, St.Chad’s, in the Diocese of Umthata. Umthata is in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Last August the parish held 2 joint services with St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, London visiting each other’s churches.

Sunday services are at 11 am. The rector is The Rev. Dr. Michael Peterson who also acts as Padre for the 4th Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment. Director of Music is Angus Sinclair accompanist to The Three Cantors.

St Ann's, Adelaide Village, Ontario

The original St Ann’s Church was built in 1833 was a frame building which was destroyed in 1868 during a wind storm. The current brick church was built in 1868.

Adelaide Village is located midway between London and Sarnia. The first settlers in Adelaide Village were predominantly aristocratic army personnel from England and Ireland and gentlemen farmers from Scotland.

St. Ann’s is in a two-point parish with St. John the Evangelist, Strathroy. Rector is Rev Willi Kammerer, regional dean for Medway.

Christ Church, Newbury, Ontario

Regular Anglican services in Newbury (then known as Mosa) began in 1845 with travelling missionary Rev John Gunne (1815-1872). The present church was built in 1863 under the supervision of Rev Joel Tombleson Wright (1834-1911), based in Wardsville who also ministered at Bothwell, Thamesville and Glencoe.

Today, Sunday worship has a pattern of the first Sunday of each month as a traditional Book of Common Prayer Eucharist and the other three Sunday services in the month are Book of Alternative Services Eucharist.

Christ Church, Newbury is a 3 point parish with St John's, Glencoe and St Jude's, Mt Brydges.

Newbury is village of 420 which contains McNaughton's a family business. It employs 57 and sells building materials; appliances; auto parts; liquor and beer; meat and rents equipment.
